The United States has always been a place people dream of discovering. As a host family, you can give an international student the chance to experience a whole new country and culture, right from your own home. Not sure why it’s such a rewarding thing to do? Here are 10 reasons to host an international student.

10 reasons to host an international student

Reasons to host an International Student

1. It brings the rest of the world closer

The world is a big place, and not everyone gets the chance to travel. Welcoming a student into your home lets you experience another part of the world from the comfort of your living room.

2. New culture and understanding for your family

Hosting opens your mind, and your whole family’s, to a different culture. It’s a great way to see how people live elsewhere and to realise how different, yet how similar, we all really are.

3. You make lifelong friends

Sharing your home with someone for an extended time naturally builds strong relationships, the kind that can last for years. And there’s a bonus: your new friend lives in another country you can visit one day.

4. It broadens everyone’s horizons

Hosting gives your family more life experience while helping a young person discover a new part of the world. It’s deeply fulfilling and can genuinely change someone’s life.

5. You get to try new things

While you share your culture with your student, they’ll introduce new things from theirs: food, music, activities. Nothing forms a bond quite like cooking a new recipe together or discovering a new artist.

6. You do more activities

It’s easy to fall into a routine and skip plans at weekends. Having a student around brings fresh enthusiasm to share your favourite family outings.

7. You rediscover your city

When you live somewhere, it’s easy to forget what it has to offer. Showing your student around lets you see your city with fresh eyes and feel proud of it all over again.

8. You improve your communication skills

You’ll get used to communicating clearly with someone still learning local expressions, and you’ll probably pick up a few words of their language along the way.

9. It shakes up your routine

It’s easy to get stuck doing the same things every day. A host student is the perfect excuse to break that routine and add some excitement to daily life.

10. It’s a lot of fun!

Above all, hosting is fun. You’ll laugh a lot, come out of your shell and enjoy a unique, dynamic time, because no two students are ever the same. So, what are you waiting for?
