The famous streets of San Francisco

San Francisco is known for many things; the Golden Gate Bridge, beautiful Victorian houses, the unique cable cars and the old Alcatraz prison. But did you know that there are also famous streets of San Francisco? These are a few of the most emblematic streets in this gorgeous city:

 

Lombard Street

This is hands-down the most well-known street of San Francisco. This zigzagging, incredibly steep street is one that tourists shouldn’t miss. In a distance of only one block, this street has eight sharp turns, making it the most crooked street in the world. Hundreds of people visit Lombard street every day to watch cars make their way down the hill.

Haight Street

The main street of the famous Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. Haight-Ashbury is known as the birthplace of the hippie subculture in the 1960´s. These days, the neighborhood is the center for art and music culture in San Francisco, welcoming all different types of people. Haight Street is part of Upper Haight and is good place for shopping and restaurants. If you want a more-laid back vibe, head to Lower Haight and check out the record shops, book stores, or go see some live music.

Fillmore Street

Fillmore Street begins in Lower Haight but is the principal street of the Fillmore district of San Francisco. This area is known to be very diverse, it includes many family-owned businesses, ethnic food from all over the world, jazz clubs and all kinds of unique shops and boutiques. A walk down this street is great way to experience an authentic San Francisco neighborhood.

Filbert Street

This is officially San Francisco’s steepest street. It descends 65 feet with a maximum gradient of 31.5%. This street has been nicknamed watermelon hill thanks to a short video that David Letterman included on The Late Show in the 1990´s. The clip shows them tossing different objects, one of them being a huge box of watermelons, down Filbert Street in San Francisco.

Sacramento Street

If you want to see the beautiful Victorian houses of San Francisco, visit Sacramento Street. This street has some of the most gorgeous old houses in the city. Characterized by their colorful facades, geometric stained glass windows, pyramidal peaked roofs and intricate woodwork, these houses will truly impress you.
